The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 as an institution with the aim of promoting cultural
exchange activities between Japan and other countries in the world. The legal base for the establishment of the Japan
Foundation is a Special Legislation of the Japanese Diet.
Since 1st October 2003, the Japan Foundation status has been
changed into an independent administrative institution. It is hope that this status change can give more indepence to the
Japan Foundation, so that it can focused more on the cultural activities.
As a consuquence of this change, a new
organizational structures has been formed. This time, the Japan Foundation activities will be focused on 4 areas of concern
(which is also the four main goals of the Japan Foundation), those are:
* Arts and Cultural Exchange
* Japanese
Language Education
* Intellectual Exchange and the development of Japanese Studies
* Collecting and providing
information needed to support the international exchange activities.
Based on these 4 main areas of activities, the
Japan Foundation is divided into three main divisions, those are: Cultural Division, Language Division, and Japanese Studies
Division.
Before, the main funding of the Japan Foundation was the Japanese Government. But, after the structural
change, the portion of governement funding are... Now, the funding for Japan Foundation comes mostly from endowment funds,
government subsidies, and donation from private sectors and invidiuals. This makes it possible for the Japan Foundation to
retain its relative independence in its activities.
Until now, the Japan Foundation has established 24 offices in 20
countries worldwide. Including 4 offices in Japan, those are in Tokyo, Kyoto, Kansai and Urawa. Three in United States - one
in Los Angeles, two in New york. The last office establish was the Vietnam office in Hanoi, which just begun to operate in
the 2007/2008 fiscal year.
For Southeast Asia region, the Japan Foundation has established 5 offices, in Jakarta,
Kuala Lumpur,Manila, Bangkok and Hanoi. With the growing importance of Southeast Asia in the world, the Japan Foundation want
to increase its involvement in the region as a whole. That is why, on 1 April 2007, The Japan Foundation established the
Southeast Asian Bureau in Bangkok. For now, the bureau is still merged with the Bangkok office in Thailand.
